Here’s to Fridays! Hope you have a *sparkling* weekend.
The cinemagraphs on this blog are just delicious. Beautifully subtle GIFs made from truly great photography. I recommend a look, particularly for those interested in fashion (which generally I am not, very much) but also for the general photography/media lovers. Augh. So lovely.
Today I did not hang myself because I saw the intrepid Cratey for the first time in a year!
Though I didn’t see that rearing horse until later.
Ele and I caught up for lunchternoon tea today, and it was SUPER. We went to Darby Street for smoothies, and man - you simply cannot beat watermelon+strawberries+ice cream, it is the best!! Then we chilled (quite literally) in Civic Park for a while, and suddenly a few hours had passed without me noticing.
It’s the first time I’ve been in to the *cough cough* so-called “CBD” of Newcastle in a really long time, and actually it was eerie how little has changed since I moved to the town thirteen years ago. Still a plethora of empty storefronts and shops that have gone out of business… We keep being told that Newcastle is “rejuvenated” but I guess I haven’t seen that yet. Seeing the huge empty space left by the 80-year-old fig trees on Laman Street hurt - I loved those trees, and the street looks just awful now.
It was funny crossing this bridge though, it’s been at least three or four years since I last walked over it, and I used to walk over it every day for nine years on my way home from school. I don’t know how long the horse has been there, but it looks familiar, so maybe quite a while?
It spoke to me on a level I didn’t know I had
The producers of the Prince of Egypt were faced with the challenge of needing to create multiple language tracks so that the film could be viewed all over the world. Dreamworks International Production located and recorded talent from all over the globe. This video demonstrates the seamless quality the entire Dreamworks crew was able to achieve.
Really, really beautiful and just another testament (no pun intended) to how well-made this movie was. Always gonna be my favorite.
This was one of my favourite songs we sang in choir back in the day. We had trouble remembering the Hebrew part sometimes, so we used to sing “Nikita’s a custard tart, um zu ga-alta”. As fourteen year olds we found this hilarious.
And now, this video… Augh! I so very much miss hearing all these languages!! Who’d have thought that now Swedish, Dutch, Greek and Czech could have ended up meaning more to me than “foreign language I don’t understand”… or that I would be able to recognise them!
If you’ve missed the whole explosion, put aside half an hour and get up to speed:
http://vimeo.com/37119711For all the haters, well done for thinking critically and doing research straight away, rather than rejoicing in the bananas level of viral campaign perfection like I did.
But a few things.
1. “Only 32% [of KONY2012 donations] went to direct services, with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production”.
To make an idea this widely heard so quickly requires time, equipment, money, and big picture thinking. There are countless charities/causes out there that could benefit greatly spending some time and resources on getting word out and interest up rather than selling jars of jam for $2 a pop and having zero outgoings.
2. On the “college kid activism” thing… I realise it is funny that everyone goes apeshit over stuff like this so quickly. But isn’t that the point? Hitting with comments like “horrible things happen every day, it makes me so angry to see everyone reblogging when I consistently give to charities without needing to be told to” etc are preachy and lame. Your efforts to make redundant others’ incited urge to help (momentary or otherwise) just comes off as an uppity wank.
It’s good to question these things. Military intervention is potentially whack. And it’s true, something is not always better than nothing. But don’t complain about them glorifying themselves as film makers unless you are a humble film maker, and don’t big note yourself for being above viral fads through soap-boxing about your regular charity donations. On Tumblr. It just doesn’t make sense.
We’re a vain, attention deficit generation and the reason it is trending on Twitter, being shared on Facebook, and being argued about on Tumblr is because it appealed to what most people do on here every night; to pump in to the world what they think is of value, interest or importance.
Just gonna use this as a “hear hear” because my penvy prevents me from being able to rewrite what Grace has already so eloquently written. Here’s the critical article I was directed to - http://theeducatedfieldnegro.tumblr.com/post/18894846735/we-got-trouble - though I imagine many of you have already seen it. Good to hear lots of views, but not good to discourage people getting angry and paying attention… good to encourage looking further afield, not good to discourage uniting for a cause… it’s complex. But it’s been amazing to see this spread so far in the last 12 hours especially, and you can’t argue that it’s an extremely clever and well put together video.

Weeks, months or years, its nice when you can pick up exactly where you left off.
Wait no stop again, I should give credit, Bridie introduced me, and I cannot help but loudly and wholeheartedly concur with above sentiments, and also say there is no one I would rather be a zebra with.

Save the date.
Fuck it, I am going to fucking survive this just so I can hug Bridie because she is the best.
In other news: my morning has been awful. BUT the rest of the today is going to be AT LEAST okay and probably better than that because I will have company again. It’s just the bits where I’m on my own that I’m not dealing with so well.
